Professional Experience

Debra acts for and advises individuals and SMEs in relation to:

  • commercial and contractual disputes (including building disputes);
  • trade practices and insolvency;
  • corporate governance;
  • professional negligence;
  • Wills, Probate & inheritance claims;
  • defamation / libel / slander;
  • insurance policy coverage and policy claims;

Debra has considerable experience in risk mitigation, dispute resolution and litigation in many areas involving business and personal dealings. She has acted for and against professionals (including in disciplinary proceedings) such as accountants, real estate agents, engineers, physiotherapists, financial planners, chiropractors, surveyors, veterinary surgeons, lawyers, etc.

Debra is a skilled and experienced litigator and can also assist clients to resolve matters to avoid litigation, where possible.

Where litigation is unavoidable, Debra assists in all phases of the process including pre claim procedures and issuing or defending legal proceedings.

Debra has specific expertise in claims against insurers where there is a dispute as to policy coverage.

Debra has been the South Australian Editor of the Insurance Law Bulletin for many years and is a member of the Australian Insurance Law Association.

She is currently President of the South Australian Chapter of the Australian Professional Indemnity Group.

Contribution to the Legal Profession

Debra contributes to the legal profession in a number of ways. She is a member of the Legal Practitioners Board of Examiners and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and sits on two Committees of the Law Society (International Legal Practice Committee and the Animal Law Committee).

The Community

Debra is a cross professions panel member of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She is also an active contributor to various social and community bodies and is a Director of RSPCA SA Inc., and Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Executive Committee.

She is also a Director of the Chiropractic & Osteopathy Education Foundation Ltd. (a charitable/educational foundation) and an ad hoc member of the Bellberry Limited Human Research & Ethics Committees.

Debra has been the Presiding Member of the Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia, the legal member of the Chiropractic & Osteopathy Board of South Australia and a member of the Human Research & Ethics Committees of the Women’s & Children’s and Modbury Public Hospitals.

She has taught at the University of Adelaide in the Law School and also the Veterinary School and is a member of Women on Boards and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD).
